Hey Friend,
Happy Friday!
Picture this:
You’re standing in the garage, sanding down a table top to refinish it.
You’ve got the local Rock station on the radio and the DJ comes on, blabbering about this 80's rock star coming to town...
...and "we’re giving away this signed guitar and you can *WIN* if you’re caller number 369 (because, you know, 69 is this rock star’s favorite number LOL), yada, yada, yada..."
You've got a guitar geek in your life - you don’t care one way or another for the rock star, and you don’t know of your geek does either.
What’s the first thing that goes through your mind?
- Ooo, a signed guitar by so-and-so, whoever he is.
- Ooo, I could win a guitar for my geek...
- Hmm, what would my geek do with it? Hang it on a wall to display the autograph? Play it? Sell it?
Do you try to win it?
This is not hypothetical. My wife came to me with these questions.
She wondered what I would do (as the resident guitar geek) if she were to win said guitar.
My initial thought was, it would probably depend on the guitar itself.
Is it a professional level guitar or one of the vendor’s second (or third) tier models? Or is the signature supposed to be the real prize?
But then more I thought about it, the less clear-cut it became. - Was this a guitar the artist used on an album or tour?
- Does it have any significant meaning to the artist or is it a promotional ’throw-away'?
- Do I respect the artist’s work?
- Am I a fan?
- What is the guitar's value?
- Would it increase in value or fade into obscurity over time?
- Just how famous is this artist?
Ugh!
And then, “Why am I even bothering to think about this - I never win anything… Enough with the monkey brain already! ” 🙂
As a player. what do you think about the whole idea of an autographed guitar?
Would you display it like a piece of artwork, hoping there’s a demand for it in the future, or would you spray some clear coat over the signature and play it?
Should the artist, or the guitar, be revered?
And then it hit me…
These contests aren’t FOR guitar players. They’re for fans.
We want a guitar for the music we can make, and if it’s a barely playable knock-off, you can keep it.
If it’s a guitar someone would use in the studio or on stage, you have my attention.
What say you?
Peace~
Dave
