Subject: The Minor Third in the Major Triad

Hey Friend,

Yesterday we looked at the first interval in a major chord - the major third, which consists of two whole steps (four frets up) from the tonic (or 1 note) in a major scale.

The second interval in a major chord is a minor third interval. It starts where the first one left off.

Your starting point is on the major third we just landed on. It is from there that you start to count frets (or spaces). To raise the next pitch, you must slide up the fingerboard three frets (a half step and a whole step). 

You then land on the 5 note, the same as the perfect fifth interval in the major scale.

Here are the chord intervals again:

1 = perfect unison (tonic).
3 = major third interval, which is two whole steps (or four half steps) up from the tonic.
5 = perfect fifth, which is three whole steps and a half step above the root note (tonic).

And this is what the interval between the major third and perfect fifth equates to in a major scale (C major, again).

The Interval:     3   4  5m  5 (this is a minor third interval)
The note:          E  F   F#  G
Spaces:              5   6    7     
Steps:                   H   W

1    2    3    4    5        6    7    8    9  10  11   12       13  (if you were counting frets, starting with the first, this is how the notes would line up to a fret number)   

Put a major third and minor third interval together in a chord and you have a major triad sound.

If you flip the two intervals around and start with a minor third interval first in the chord construction, it will give you the minor triad sound.      

Something tells me visuals would be a lot more helpful… Unfortunately, I’ve gotta roll for today. Work, you know...
