Hey Friend,
Whoa! It's the first Friday the 13th of 2017!
I'm going to focus on it being the last day of the work week, not that it's an unlucky day or that hockey-masked monsters like to slice and dice on days like this... I will be avoiding ladders, though!
Anyhoo, I've seen some interesting videos this week that tie in nicely with our chord studies. These centered around music theory topics, which of course I find fascinating.
The first one is a discussion of why guitarists really should understand the basics of music theory. The dude (Tyler Larson) makes a pretty compelling point - knowing something about how music works can only help you, not get in the way.
If you're at all like me, I used to think learning music theory was a dry, boring pursuit. You know, nothing but learning how to read sheet music with all its lines, symbols, dots and Italian words. I mean, largo and glissando . Really?
I'm a Rock player - isn't that stuff for music teachers and people who play Classical music?
Turns out, no. They were just trying to keep all the good stuff a secret by making it kind of boring (or at least, that's what I used to think).
Once I learned that music theory wasn't just writing out music on paper and found that it's more about understanding the emotions and how to elicit them through music, theory became a different animal for me.
That's not the point he makes in his video, just my interjection, but knowing anything in general tends to prepare you more than not knowing something. Even a basic understanding.
Tying in nicely with the discussion of music theory is this gem of a video. Adam Neely is talking about whether different keys can have more of an emotional effect on listeners. He gets kind of deep in this, but it's interesting. Those of you with extra large craniums will enjoy!
The mistress is calling... gotta go play in traffic. Have an awesome Friday the 13th!
Peace~
