Hey Friend,
Let’s take a little break on the picking hand focus today.
Are you a Metallica fan?
I can’t say I’m super familiar with their music, but I have a lot of respect for their work.
In the interview, Kirk gave one of the secrets to success that so few people are willing to implement.
Kirk was talking about his first lesson with Joe. Joe basically told him not to waste their time together.
In other words, “if you’re not going to do the work I assign you, don’t bother coming back.”
Pretty ballsy of Joe (nothing like a little "straight talk" right out of the gate), but I think that is probably one of the main reasons Joe Satriani lists some of the most famous guitar players of our time as his former students.
Steve Vai…
Kirk Hammett…
Rusty Cooley…
Andy Timmons…
Alex Skolnick…
Larry LaLonde
Joe wasn’t famous yet, but he knew he had something these students needed. His time was valuable and he wanted his students to know he was investing a valuable resource in them.
He had an expectation that they would do the work he assigned for the week. And he wasn’t afraid to call them out if they didn’t do it.
He showed he was serious.
Clearly, these students took his message seriously, too, and the work paid off!
It’s a good reminder that we should pursue what we want with a “no nonsense” attitude. Be willing to do whatever work is needed to advance to the next step.
Think on that today - what are you wanting in your life that you haven’t been making much progress on lately?
Can you buckle down, do the work and bust past the inertia that’s currently holding you in place?
Do you need a good ass whoopin’? I know I do on a regular basis…
Hey, I wouldn’t say it if I didn’t love ya!
Peace~
Dave
