Hey Friend,
So far in the key of G major, we've looked at the G, Am, Bm, C and D triads. Next up will be E minor, which we've seen before in the key of C major. Before we get there, though, what can you do with the chords we've already talked about?
Five little chords.
Turns out there's a lot you can do. G major is a common key used in Rock and Country, so whether you're fingerpicking arpeggios or slamming power chords, you can find a bunch of songs written in G major. Here's some evidence...
Shane at Song Key Finder put together a list of over 900 songs in just the key of G major alone, ranked by their popularity. There are 32 pages, and I'm fairly certain you will find a song you know on every page. It's definitely not an exhaustive list, but 900's a big number.
The site is actually very handy if you're interested in finding out the key of a song. You can simply type in the name of the song or artist and get some quick information that can help you play along.
Your exercise for the day is to take a look at the list on page one of the key of G major and see how many songs you're familiar with. The very first one on the list, Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here" was a song I learned and played in my very first band. A classic!
What do you see there? I'll bet there's at least three songs you know - heck, probably at least a dozen!
The point is, you are learning chords that have been used to make some of the most memorable music of our time, so don't forget to "take a look out the window" every once in a while. You're getting some practical information you can apply right now to play songs you love.
Have the best possible Monday!
Peace~
