Hey Friend,
Before I get back to the weekend chore list, I came across an article I thought explained slash chords quite well. Slash chords imply that you’re going to use an inversion other than the root inversion of a chord (not that these are the chords Slash always uses - except he does like the rest of us).
For example, when you see a G chord in a chart, it implies that the G note of the chord is in the bass note position of the chord. A slash chord tells you a different note is in the bass.
I’ve talked about them before (when you get a chord chart for a song and see something like C/E in it), but I don’t know that I’ve explained them as well as Gary Ewer does on his The Essential Secrets of Songwriting blog.
He’s got a ton of good information not only for song writing, but also music foundations that will help with your guitar journey.
I’ve realized over the years that while guitar is my primary instrument, I’ll never be a shredder or virtuoso. Guitar is the best tool for me to find new musical ideas, and I get how it works. I gain inspiration from the sounds I can create, and that lets to songs.
It took me a long time to figure out that songwriting and production is my real musical direction, not being a well-known guitar player.
Maybe you can find something useful in Gary’s songwriting blog. If nothing else, you’ll get a better understanding of what it takes to write music. Check out “ How to Use Chord Inversions.”
I’ll see you tomorrow.
Peace~
Dave
