Hey Friend,

We all learn differently.

Some of us can read a book and study concepts and do just fine. Others of us learn better by listening to the topic being explained. Then there are those of us that have to see something done before we understand what's going on.

I'm definitely a hands-on learner - I have a hard time retaining things I only read, but when I can get my hands on something and see it work, I have a much more solid understanding.

Demonstrations are a key learning tool. That's one of the reasons Youtube is so popular. There's millions of guitar lesson videos on Youtube!

In fact, there's a good chance that if you wanted to learn a particular song by your favorite artist, there's a video for that. Maybe by the artist themselves!

For example, there was a set of videos shot of James Taylor teaching a number of his more famous tunes. Has close-ups of him playing and everything.

Unfortunately, while many videos have great content, sometimes the teacher doesn't have the best delivery. These' are great videos from JT, but he doesn't really explain what he's doing - the finger-picking or chord fingering. But what he does have is video showing left and right hand activity.

That's where Video Surgeon comes in (yup, the little brother of Song Surgeon, the audio software I use to help learn songs and have been telling you about).

I downloaded the "Carolina on My Mind" video lesson into Video Surgeon. The video quality was just as good as Youtube. I was able to slow the tempo of the video down (just like Song Surgeon).

But where this software really helped me was zooming in on the chord fingering. Fortunately the footage was straight over his hands and you can really make out where the fingers are going.

Here's a short video showing a zoomed-in clip of the song.

Just so you know, the full video shows side-by-side footage of the left and right hand. But see what I did here? I was able to zoom in on just the left hand to focus on learning the chord changes. I also slowed the video down to 75% of the original tempo.

Remember, the better the tools you have, the quicker and easier you get the job done.

Video Surgeon is just another excellent tool in the box that will help you reach your guitar playing goals. BTW, it can help you learn all sorts of other things, too!

Peace~
