Subject: Playing Over D Minor

Hey Friend,

Alright, happy Thursday. We’re rounding third base and on the slide into the weekend - Come on, Friday!

I updated the MP3 for the intervals over the C major chord, so now there’s a half-note strum for each bar. This way you can hear each interval played over the chord rather than just on the tonic note (C).

The PDF stays the same, because we’re playing the same set scale. The idea is to hear how each note interacts with the chord, and vice versa.

For the next exercise, Let’s see what the C major scale intervals sound like over the IIm chord, D minor.

You can use the same tabs for the interval notes and play along with the MP3.

What I want you to do is listen through the MP3 and write down your observations about the sound of each interval over the chord.

How well do the notes interact with the chord? Do they sound good or bad? Happy or sad?

Do they seem to work together, or can you hear some conflict between the note and the chord in each system.

As you listen to each note played, you’re getting some insight into how melodies come about. Notes are chosen based on what they sound like in relation to the other components of the song and what the desired effect is.

Now I’m not going to say this is always a conscious choice, but as I’ve explained before, our brains know what works and what doesn’t. So when you hear something that clearly sounds like it’s in conflict - like there is a tension in the sound - it wasn’t by accident.

The songwriter is sending a message.

We’ll dig a little deeper into that idea tomorrow. Have a great one!

Peace~

Dave
