Hey Friend,
Thanks again for your support as I sort out the direction of Learn To Play Rock Guitar.
I have a question for you. When you select music to listen to, how do you choose what to listen to? Do you pick based on mood? Or are you more of a "whatever is on the radio" type of person?
I'm more of a "mood" listener. I'll tend to play music that matches how I happen to be feeling at the moment.
I'm not sure how to quantify that, but I have to wonder if our minds and bodies try to find a match based on the physical properties of how we're feeling at the time.
For instance, there are times when I'm feeling a bit hostile, angry at the world (we all get there sometimes, am I right?), and I like nothing more that putting on fast, aggressive, slightly angry music. Avenged Sevenfold comes to mind almost immediately.
When I'm mellow or a bit melancholy, there's plenty to choose from - some guitar based music, some not. Since I'm a sappy person, the topics of heartbreak and lost love are always near and dear to my heart.
Obviously our moods can change quickly and without too much stimulus, but does that coincide with a physical change somehow? I've mentioned sympathetic resonance before (where a stationary string begins to match the vibration of another plucked string ). Here's a cool demonstration.
Do our minds and bodies pick up on all the various vibrations of the music's sound waves, causing us to feel the emotion present in the music? Is this why the individual notes present in a chord change how we feel based on the sound waves created? Can you use these ideas in your music to make it more "ear catching?"
Give it some thought today.
Peace~
