Hey Friend,
The exercise today is an expanded take on yesterday's lesson material.
What’s interesting to me (and maybe a little exciting) is that the song I was thinking about for the second section (today’s addition) isn’t part of the song from the first section. I guess my brain somehow merged the two together…
The first part (8 measures) was inspired by The Beatles song “Something.” George Harrison isn’t credited for writing many Beatles songs, but this one has always been one of my favorites. Here’s where the exciting part comes in. As I played the four chord exercise, I wasn’t thinking about “Something” at all, I was thinking about the song “If,” by Bread.
This exercise morphs from “Something” to “If” with a possible key change to boot. What’s throwing me off is the use of the F and Dm chords in the second section.
Key of A is pretty apparent with the various A triads plus the D and E. D minor isn’t part of the key of A, but I suppose substituting it in to support the flow of the progression is acceptable. It’s that F major that really throws a wrench in it.
It would require that F be an F# minor chord, so there’s no way we’re still in the key of A. So we just jump out of key for a sec and then right back in.
No worries, just gonna modulate for a second, Mates!
Anyway, I like how this came out regardless of the theory and mechanics.
I’m not 100% sure, but I think when your brain starts making connections like this and manifesting them in the music you’re writing down or playing, the music is getting in there.
Maybe I’m slowly morphing into a full-on musician, kinda like that dude from “ District 9,” morphing from human into alien. Just not that drastic a transformation… Or is it? LOL!
Can you hear what I’m talking about? Where the influences come from? Hope you like it!
Peace~
