Subject: Mixolydian Exercises

Hey Friend,

The Mixolydian mode starts with the fifth scale degree of the key. In the examples today (as the rest of them have been), we’re working in C major, so that note is G.

Pay close attention to the finger pattern as you play the exercise. You should be starting to get the hang of these, but did you notice you are playing the same pattern on three consecutive strings?

There are three fingering patterns when playing three note per string scales. There’s the:

Tone - Tone
Semitone - Tone
Tone - Semitone

Looking at the exercise today, you can see the sixth, fifth and fourth strings all utilize the Tone - Tone pattern. The third and second strings use the Semitone - Tone pattern and the first string uses the Tone-Semitone pattern.

If you dig even deeper and imagine seven or eight strings on the guitar, you’ll find that these three note patterns repeat, too. There are three consecutive strings using the Tone - Tone pattern, and two each of Semitone - Tone and Tone - Semitone.

Then they start all over again. They’d repeat into infinity if we could hear them and had enough strings, but that’s an experiment someone else can mess with!

Here are the exercise files...

See you tomorrow!

Peace~
