Hey Friend,
Well that was a "fun" little excursion to the edge.
If nothing else, my little household emergency over the past few days has slapped me "upside the head” with a reminder that I’ve got some changes that have to happen if I’m going to keep some semblance of sanity.
Not to mention all the great news happening everywhere…
Maybe we’re all slightly crazy in that we’re able to continue to get up, go to work, come home and go to bed…
Maybe it’s the routine that helps us keep it together.
Whatever. If everyone just played guitar and used music as a way to help solve problems, we’d all be better off.

Anyhoo, new exercise today.
I kept things in the key of A, starting with an A7M in the riff. Mix in a major, minor and minor 7th chord and it makes for a nice little progression.
The standard progression would look like this:
I IIIm IIm V
A C#m Bm D
Play this on your guitar and then play the exercise.
I7M IIIm IIm7 V
A7M C#m Bm7 D
You’ll immediately notice how substituting triads with some 7th chords gives the riff a lighter feel. It becomes more interesting to listen to because it’s pulling on a deeper set of emotions.
Something about this riff got me thinking about the song "Operator” by Jim Croce. The progression isn’t the same, but there are similar changes that must have registered in my head.
Here are the files:
Give it a roll.
Hope you have fine day.
Peace~
Dave
