Hey Friend,
You have 30 seconds to answer this question:
What’s your favorite Rock tune?
Ready… Go!
Tick, tock…
Alright, time’s up.
What’d you come up with? Tough question, right?
I’ll go first.
I’ve gotta say, the song that keeps coming back to me is “ Rosanna” by Toto.
It’s got one of the most prolific guitar solos ever, and there’s no denying the musicianship of every member of Toto.
Heck, they were the studio musicians responsible for much of Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” album, only the best-selling album of all time internationally.
Getting back to the solo, I fired up Song Surgeon and queued the solo. Hmm, 81.5 beats per minute…
Shouldn’t be bad, but that swing shuffle beat has it really grooving. Too fast...
So I slowed it down to 50% tempo… Still too fast...
I then took it to 30%, but that was a little too slow. Looks like 40% is the sweet spot to make out every note at a tempo I can actually learn and practice it.
Alright, isolate it and loop. Now I can listen to the solo multiple times without having to mess with player controls - Song Surgeon puts it on auto.
I can hear every little bend, vibrato, slide and pick stroke. Even the slightly out-of-pitch over-bends.
Makes it a lot easier to learn these guitar parts when you can actually hear what they’re doing!
Okay, your turn.
I challenge you to take your favorite tune right now and slow it down with Song Surgeon.
Open your song in it. Listen to the difference between normal speed and slowed down by clicking on the easy % buttons in the tempo section.
Makes it a LOT easier to hear what’s going on, doesn’t it? Especially with some of those crazy shred-style guitar solos.
Let me know how it comes out. 😉
Peace~
Dave
