Subject: It’s Never Too Late...

Hey Friend,

For love, that is. Well, for most things. Like playing guitar. Or starting a new business.

Whatever age you are, you might think “if I’d only started when I was…,” or “if I was just a little older…”

Naw, quit thinking like that. You can find examples of all over of people ignoring those excuses to build the lives they want to live.

If you want to Rock, then Rock!

Here’s an arpeggio riff to help you “move on down the road.”

This is the intro to “Too Late For Love” by Def Leppard. It came out in 1983 on the Pyromania album. I remember watching the video on MTV.

We’re working in the key of E minor. I know this because the C, D and G major chords show up as part of the riff. My first clue was C and D. Any time you have two concurrent major chords, there’s usually two choices of key - either major or minor.

You just have to remember the scale pattern to figure it out:

W W H W W W H (major)

or...

W H W W H W W (minor)

Because the song has an overall minor feel, I’m pretty confident the key is E minor, because the songs starts on an E minor chord. The other option would be G major.

This riff is a little trickier that the previous two exercises, simply because we’re sliding the chords from C to D and there’s some finger work you need to do. In other words, the chord changes are more dynamic than other exercises.

Not to worry, it’s not a difficult riff. It might just take a little time to get comfortable with the changes.

In the tabs, I've shown the full chords, but you don’t need to finger them completely to play the riff. Look at the second system (that’s the second four measures) for the actual riff and use the chord charts as a guide for your fingering.

For example, when you shift from C to D, you don’t need the note on the third string, so you can ignore that fingering. Just slide the C chord fingering up two frets so your index finger is on the fourth fret of the fourth string and your middle is on the fifth string, fifth fret.
