Subject: It Sounded Easy Enough...

Hey Friend,

Day Two of needing to write while under the cover of headphones. My wife has a deadline to get through these webinars, so you may be getting a few more of these emails with me distracted by the music I happen to have on at the moment.

After yesterday's listening session of Paul McCartney & Wings, I'm kind of locked in a groove. I was compelled to pick up my guitar last night and start trying to learn the song "Bluebird," another song off the Band On The Run album.

I thought, "Wow, a nice acoustic tune I can learn relatively quickly." Sir Paul had other ideas for me...

The effort left me simply amazed at the complexity of the tune and just how much more I have to learn about creating chord progressions that compliment the melody. In fat, the more I listen to and study the Beatles' writing, the more astounded I am. For four guys with no musical training, they have created some of the most enduring music ever heard.

I'd like to explore this more at some point, this transformation the Beatles underwent as they transitioned from basically a cover band into musicians with intuitions into the workings of melody and harmony. Was it simply the total immersion into music and the arrangements they learned for the songs they were covering? Was it the work ethic an a curiosity? Maybe it was guidance of George Martin.

It's a rare person that just intuitively feels music, that knows when two unrelated keys can work together or when chords that don't seem to belong together can be sewn together to create something beautiful. I almost feel like if I can unlock a just little of what they learned, it would be enough to unlock the dam of music inside me.

I'm compelled to take Joe Walsh's advice and learn every Beatles song in its entirety.

Unrelated but fun, I had an interesting conversation with a lady yesterday. I relayed that I had been listening to Wings and she told me a story about when she was a kid living in Rhode Island. Her dad was friends with the man that managed the airport. He would call them up and say that people were flying in and he wanted to introduce them.

So she was lucky enough to have private meetings with The Beatles, The Stones and countless other artists. She said they were all cool people, unpretentious, just people. Just a very cool story.

I'm loving that it's FRIDAY!!! Hope y'all have a great pre-weekend day!

Peace~
