Subject: Here’s An Octave Pattern

Hey Friend,

Here’s another fun little pattern to help you remember where note are on the strings.

If you need to find the perfect octave of a note quickly, try this little trick:

Two over, two up.

What does this mean?

Two strings over, two frets up.

Let’s look at the A note on the sixth string. You play an A at the fifth fret. Now we already know this is the same pitch as the fifth string A note, so that’s not giving us the octave itself.

But you’re really close to it, and you can easily play the octave with your ring finger or pinky, whichever is more comfortable for you.

From the A note on the sixth string (fifth fret), count over two strings in the same position (again, fifth fret) . This puts you on the fourth string (D) at the G note. Slide your finger up two frets, and there’s the A note!

So you can keep your index finger on the sixth string, fifth fret and, put your ring or pinky finger on the fourth string, seventh fret, and play a perfect octave of A.

A Pitch

    e |————————————|
    B |————————————|
    G |————————————|
    D |——————7—————-|
    A |————————————|
    E |————5———————-|

This also works from the fifth string to the third:

A Pitch

    e |————————————|
    B |————————————|
    G |—2——————————-|
    D |————————————|
    A |————————————|
    E |————————————|

(A is the open string)

When we get to the D string and try this, it’s a little different. Our octave is going to be two strings over, three frets up. That’s because of that rascally second string being a half step lower that the other string tunings.

Here’s the A note from the D string:

    e |————————————-|
    B |—————————10——|
    G |————————————|
    D |——————7—————-|
    A |————————————|
    E |————————————|

And from the G string:

    e |————5———————-|
    B |————————————|
    G |—2——————————-|
    D |————————————|
    A |————————————|
    E |————————————|

Again, these are all just simple patterns to help you locate notes along the fingerboard. Think of them like a low-tech GPS.

Hope you have a fun, relaxing Saturday planned. I’m off to get a hair or two cut. Have a great one!

Peace~
