Hey Friend,
First off, Happy New Year!
What a weird week it’s been leading up to today!
There were only two of us left at work all week. Everyone else took vacation (not that it’s saying much - there are only five of us in the company), so we opted to work from home instead of going into the office.
For most of the week, it was quiet. On Friday, though, the phone was ringing off the hook all morning. And today has been a headache so far.
After an easy week (including Christmas day), and expecting it to remain quiet all week, let’s just say it’s been annoying…
Thinking about it now, though, it’s a perfect reminder of how NOT to behave in 2019.
Chaos.
If you want to make progress in learning a skill or reaching a goal, a chaotic approach will not get you the results you want. You must take a consistent course of action towards your objective.
Watching a bunch of guitar videos on Youtube might seem like a valid way to learn how to play, but it’s too easy to get sidetracked. Unless you’re incredibly disciplined, before you know it you’ll be watching videos of cats playing guitars (really) instead of learning a riff or new chord.
Distraction in the media is by design. EVERYONE wants your eyeballs, your attention. (FULL DISCLOSURE: Yes, even I want your attention).
We like to think we’re autonomous creatures, in control of our destinies. However, as long as we allow outside influences to bounce us around from one thing to another, that’s all we’ll be - a rubber kick ball bouncing around the playground of life.
Intention.
What's your guitar goal for 2019? Have you thought about it?
Remember, before you start down the road, you have to know where you want to go. Is there a song you want to learn? A skill level you want to reach?
Figure that out first. Then determine what has to happen to get there. You’ve got to be intentional with a strategy to get there - i.e. some sort of map.
Treat guitar like you would treat your relationships or job. You have career goals, financial goals, health goals. You need to take care of your peace and relaxation goals, too!
Hopefully you have some time today or tomorrow to map out what you’d like to learn on your guitar (and everything else).
I like two steps. Simple is ALWAYS better.
Be careful… Be safe… And let’s make 2019 better than 2018... Cheers!
Peace~
Dave
