Subject: Guitarists Have More Fun

Hey Friend,

Are you a social butterfly? Do you enjoy being the center of attention? Or do you prefer to hang back and observe - or blend into the wall?

Regardless of how you're wired, being a guitar player can help you be more fun.

Other than a a few bragging rights, I don't see all these home improvement projects making me more socially attractive. I mean, here's how the conversations go...

"Wow, what a beautiful floor!"

"Thanks, we put it in ourselves."

"Oh, you did a great job! Was it hard?"

"Yeah, it took us days... blah, blah, blah." Their eyes glaze over...

"Okay, did I see cheese and crackers over there?"

Definitely not as fascinating as some good music or stories from the road.

As a guitar player, people will be drawn to the music coming from you. That brings us to the number six reason why you should spend your time learning guitar instead of being a poster child for "This Old House."

Number 6...

10.    Less Offensive Visually
9.      More Mobile
8.      Less Tools Needed
7.      Less Physically Painful
6.      More Fun Socially
5.      More Impressive
4.      Sexier
3.      More Envy
2.      Less Expensive
1.      More Respect

I have to admit, there is some pride in completing these projects around the house. Even though I'm a perfectionist and beat myself up for messing up some of the little details, we're still pretty satisfied with the outcome in most cases.

It's a lot easier to accept how a project turns out when you do it yourself than when you pay someone else to come in and do it. When you hand over large amounts of money to someone who advertises themselves as a professional, you have certain expectations. You know, like that they'll do the job correctly. Sadly, our experience with contractors proves otherwise...

Regardless of who does the work, when it comes down to it, your living space doesn't add anything more than some comfort when it comes to entertaining. It's really just a space to hang out it. So if you have people over, your home improvement efforts will only be a topic of conversation for a short time.

After that, well whatever...

Now on the guitar side of things, it's a whole different story. You can get your guitar out and have a real party going on. If you perform regularly, you end up attracting more people to you. People love hanging around musicians, and you'll have more fun knowing people are enjoying your playing.

We musicians are interesting animals. Non-musicians enjoy us because we give them something they can't do on their own - the ability to make music out of nothing. We're storytellers and entertainers, and we tend to be fun people. Well, not all of us... you'll find me in the corner talking to the plant.

SIDE NOTE: I have to say, music has always been an outlet to help me interact more easily with people. I'm an introvert from way back, and learning guitar helped me come out of my shell more. There's something about having my guitar strapped over my shoulder that gives me some confidence I don't normally have. It's almost like a shield.

See for yourself. Get out your guitar at a gathering and see how people will gravitate to you. Try that with a hammer and saw. You might get a couple strange looks, and people will definitely get out of your way - they don't want to get enlisted in your project!

Now I'm off to get to work on a laundry room - anyone coming over to help? Yeah, I didn't think so...

Y'all have yourselves a great Saturday, ya hear? Rock on!

Peace~

Dave
