Subject: G# Minor Chord Positions

Hey Friend,

There are a dozen basic triads for G# minor. Included in the exercises are four of each inversion.

Inversion is an interesting term. As I've been using it in  the context of teaching you chords, the inversion type (root, first or second) is determined by the lowest pitched note.

A root inversion has the root note of the chord as its bass note (lowest pitch). A first inversion has the 3 note as the bass and a second inversion has the 5 note as the bass:

Root         1 3 5
First          3 5 1
Second     5 1 3

If things stay simple and you only use triads, it's pretty straight forward. But when you start filling out the chord with additional notes from other strings, things can get a little confusing.

It's true that the lowest pitch note determines what kind of inversion you have. Take for example the open E major triad.

If we only play notes from the fifth, fourth and third strings (as the triad dictates). Your index finger is on the third string, first fret, middle finger on the fifth string, second fret and your pinky on the fourth string, second fret.

Playing those three notes gives you a second inversion because the note order is 5 1 3 in the chord.

Guess what happens if you play the sixth string open E note, making it the lowest pitched note in the sequence (1 5 1 3)...

This second inversion chord has now become a root inversion, because the E note is now in the bass.

Make sense?

Don't do a lot of thinking on this today. Just tuck it away as a concept to be aware of as you learn more chords. It's just a seed, planted for you to come back to periodically to check on.

Frankly, as long as you learn chord patterns, you may never need to know anything more about using inversion in different scenarios. But you know me, I like to throw out ideas for you to chew on.
