Subject: G Major as the VI Chord

Hey Friend,

We’re rounding the final turn to the finish line with the key of B minor.

Im    IIdim  III IVm  Vm  VI VII
Bm C#dim D  Em  F#m G  A

The VI chord is G major, consisting of the notes G, B and D. You build it out using the G major scale, which is:

1  2 3  4 5  6   7  (8)
G A B C D E F# (G)

The key of B minor allows us the same notes to make the G major chord work, too:

1   2  3  4  5   6  7 (8)
B C# D E F# G A (B)

Play around with G and get your practice in. If you’re new to G major, the open position three finger version can be challenging, but there are plenty of alternatives you can use.

That doesn’t mean you don’t learn how to play the full open G (with the repeated G note on the first string, third fret). It just means you don’t have to get hung up on it being difficult. It is a real stretch between your ring and pinky fingers in that position, but the struggle is worth the prize.

An open G chord is one of the most used, and nicest sounding, chords in Rock. So don’t cheat yourself and skimp on it. Work those fingers and stretch!

Here are the various positions up the neck where you can play G Major.

And its barre chords:

Enjoy your day!

Peace~
