Hey Friend,
F# minor (F#m) is the Im chord for the key of F# - makes sense, right? Nothing has changed with it since we reviewed it last as the Vm chord in the key of B minor. Let’s look at the harmonic progression:
Im IIdim III IVm Vm VI VII
F#m G#dim A Bm C#m D E
The F#m chord is going to be built using the 1 3 5 notes of the F# minor scale, so let’s see that again:
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 (8)
F# G# A B C# D E (F#)
That gives us the F#, A and C# notes, which makes the triad work as a minor chord.
Most of the time, F#m is going to be substituted with a F#5 power chord when you play Rock, but there are plenty of options for playing this chord without having to barre the second fret all the time. Check out the F#m positions exercises below to find the ones that work best for you.
I must leave you now. I have to go save the world, one computer problem at a time… Let me know if you have any guitar questions.
Peace~
Dave
