Hey Friend,
I didn’t want too much of the month to get past without getting back to “Aubrey.”
I have the introduction and beginning to the verse tabbed out and an MP3 created so you can follow along.
Hopefully you’ve been practicing the picking pattern I gave you - you will use it for the entire song, so if you’ve done your work, you should be golden.
Remember, we use PIMA, the classical guitar technique to notate the proper finger picking usage. Here’s a quick refresher if you missed it:
P = Pulgar/Thumb I = Indice/Index M = Medio/Middle A = Anular/Ring E = Mignolo/4th (pinky)
You can just remember thumb, index, middle, ring, and pinky - don’t worry, I’m not going to test you on the Spanish words that give us the acronym!
The exercises are very straightforward. The song is in 4/4 time signature (four beats per measure, the beat is on the quarter note), and we are plucking a string on every eighth note.
Your exercises, my droogie...
You can either click the links to view/play in your browser, or right-click the link to download them.
A special note when you get to the fourth measure. Notice the tempo slows down a bit. Take a listen again on the original recording to hear how David Gates creates this nice transition...
This is an excellent example of controlling your timing to serve the song.
Alright, enjoy. I don’t want to tell you what to do, but have a great weekend!
Peace~
Dave
P.S. In case you didn’t get the picking pattern email, here are the exercise files again:
