Subject: E Major as the III Chord

Hey Friend,

Next up on the tour of the chords in the key of C# minor is E major.

This is only natural since C# minor is the relative minor key of E major. Remember, three semitones (frets) lower than the major key is the start of the relative minor.

Im      II°    III  IVm   Vm   VI  VII
C#m  D#º  E  F#m  G#m  A   B

E major is made by combining the E, G# and B notes together in the 1 3 5 pattern from the E major scale.

1   2   3  4  5   6   7   (8)
E F# G# A B C# D# (E)

Of course, because the notes of E major are also part of the C# minor scale, the chord works well as part of the C# minor harmonic progression.

1    2   3   4   5   6  7   (8)
C# D# E F# G#B (C#)

See, E and C# are the same scale with different starting points. And major and minor scales use the same pattern of whole and half steps, again, just different starting points.

Major:  W W H W W W H
Minor:                       W H W W H W W

Repetition, baby!

Okay, so back to E major. Here are the exercise files for the triad:

Again, lots of positions up the neck where you can play E Major.
