Hey Friend,
We started looking at the chords in the key of C# minor last week, so let’s get back to that. Next up, D# diminished.
Diminished chords are interesting because you basically take a minor chord and then flatten the fifth note, making it a minor fifth. This note is the sixth semitone in the chromatic scale, which puts it dead center between the perfect unison (tonic) and the perfect octave.
D#° can be built out by taking the 1 3 5 notes from D# minor scale and then flattening the 5 note to make it a 5b.
Here’s D# minor:
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 (8)
D# E# F# G# A# B C# (D#)
Do you see that scale? Six sharp notes! That’s some craziness!
Grab the D# and F# notes for your 1 and 3, then take the A# and lower it down one fret to make it A.
D#, F# and A are your 1 3 5 notes for D# diminished.
Let’s look at the exercises:
I’ll leave you to look through those and try out the various positions. I’ve got to roll, so have a great day!
Peace~
