Subject: Creating Dimension

Hey Friend,

As I sat down to write this today, my wife was in the middle of listening to a work webinar. The woman giving the webinar is a Southern lady, with a heavy accent. Not unpleasant, but distracting, for sure. Especially for someone like me that's really prone to distraction.

So I had to do something to get my mind on the task at hand. I got out my headphones and fitted them over my ears. unfortunately, they didn't quite mute the webinar, so I went hunting for some music that help me along.

I scrolled through a bunch of music on my computer, and got down to Paul McCartney & Wings "Band On The Run." As the first song on CD1 started up, I thought, "How appropriate!" This is a perfect example of what I've been talking about with you guys!

Ideally, you have a decent pair of headphones and can listen closely to everything going on in the intro of the title song "Band On The Run."

Notice the differences between each track - for example, how the demo has the twelve string guitar, which you don't hear in the studio version. Listen for other differences and see what you pick out.

With the studio version, you'll hear how the instruments move from left to right, front to back. You'll hear how delay was used on the foreground guitar to create the echo from the right channel to the left.

You can also hear how plenty of space was left in the recording so that each instrument could be heard clearly.

This is one of the reasons production and engineering is so interesting to me - it's amazing how the technology was developed to give dimension to music and make it feel as if you're in the physical space with the musicians.

The Beatles were among the first recording artists to really start exploring sound design and experimenting with techniques to create new sounds and effects. you can clearly hear how that experience helped Paul McCartney with his solo projects.

Alright... work calls...

Peace~
