Hey Friend,
Sorry for the delay! Had some technical issues this morning when I was trying to get this out to you...
The C# minor barre chords are located at the fourth (root 5) and ninth frets (root 6), which is where you barre the strings with your index finger.
But I want you to try something a little different today.
When you look at the root 5 version of the chord and you get to the second power chord measure (C#5), you're going to strum all the way through the remaining strings rather than muting the first and second strings.
Instead of giving you a full C#m chord, this is a C#m7 chord (C# minor 7) due to the addition of the B note. The open E and B strings work because both notes (E and B) occur naturally in the E major scale.
The thing that gets me is the quality of that chord within a progression. You can hear this in action with the song "Dear John" by Taylor Swift.
Written in the key of E, you get to use the chords we've learned so far (E, A, B and now C#m), but with a bit of a twist. Keeping the first and second strings open throughout, it gives an open-air sound that adds a nostalgic sad, feel - perfect for this song if you listen to the lyrics. Goose bumps!
Give it a try!
Here are the exercise files for the barre chords.
Have yourself a great day!
Peace~
Dave
