Subject: Chill Out

Hey Friend,

Nothing new today.

Instead, I encourage you to jump over to Youtube and pull up a video from your favorite artist.

I don’t want you to just sit there and listen to it. I want you to focus on the rhythm of the song.

Take your experience of clapping along to the beat and test yourself against this song.

Are you able to follow along easily, or are you finding it difficult?

Is the tempo too fast, or does it sound like there is a time signature that is more complex than simple 4/4 (four beats per measure/the quarter note has the beat)?

You’ve got to watch out for those drummers! They can be sneaky with subdivisions and fills...

Fortunately, most Rock music will be in 4/4 time. Depending on the style of Rock, you’ll have some variations, but unless you’re heavily into progressive music, you should be able to follow the beat on most songs.

The important thing today is for you to listen and work on your observation skills.

What rhythmic elements do you hear? Can you imitate them with either clapping or on your guitar?

Practicing exercises are great to get the movements into your hands, but until you can apply them to actual music, they’re pretty boring.

So spend a little time watching and analyzing the rhythm in the song. If there’s footage of the guitar player playing the song, watch the hands. Try to see if you can pick up on how the picking hand is working.

Careful, though. If you’re anything like me, you could get lost down the rabbit hole watching videos all day!

Have a great Sunday - Rock on!

Peace~

Dave
