Subject: C Major as the VI Chord

Hey Friend,

We’ve come back to trusty old C major in our study of minor keys. The VI chord in the E minor key is C major.

We’ve seen C quite a few times now, but I’ll remind you that the combination of the 1 3 5 notes of the C major scale make the C major triad. Those notes are C, E and G.

Again, the E minor scale also sports these notes, albeit in different positions:

1   2  3  4  5  6   7  (8)
E F# G  A B  C  D (E)

If you were playing the harmonic scale in E minor, the major sixth is the root note of C as you start inching into the next octave with the E note (8). Here’s the E minor harmonic scale again:

Im    IIdim   III  IVm  Vm  VI  VII
Em  F#dim  G  Am   Bm  C  D

The exercises for your enjoyment:

Here are the various positions up the neck where you can play C Major.

And its barre chords:

Now I’m off to have my shaggy mane trimmed up. Y’all have a great weekend!

Peace~
