Subject: C Major Double Stops

Hey Friend,

I thought that today, before we move on to the next chord in the C major line-up, we talk about a little technique you can use to spice up your chord work. The technique is called "double stops."

I came across a good article that gives 10 things you need to know about them. The article validates a number of things I've been teaching you about music theory and how it's applied. You can read the article here

Basically, double stops are similar to power chords in that they use two notes (AKA dyads). They use the root note from the key and add the second note for harmony.

Where they differ from power chords is that you aren't limited to only using the 5 note from the scale.

I've put together some tabs to help you hear and see what's going on. As you listen to the exercise MP3, see if you can remember any songs that sound like they employ double stops. I've been a nice guy and given you an example - "Change" by John Waite.

Exercise Files

I've tabbed it in the key of C, but the song itself is actually in B major. If you want to play along with the video, simply lower everything by one fret. The double stops are used as the intro and through the verses.

The tempo for "Change" is pretty fast (150BPM), so feel free to grab your metronome and set a tempo that you can handle to get the hang of it.

Check 'em out, read the article, and have some fun with them. Hope you're having a good weekend. See you tomorrow...

Peace~

Dave
