Hey Friend,
Next up in the key of B minor is C# Diminished (shorthand C#°).
C#° is the second triad in the B minor harmonic progression:
Im II° III IVm Vm VI VII
Bm C#° D Em F#m G A
You’ll get it’s primary pitches from the C# minor scale, but we have to remember diminished chords also have a flattened 5 note. So the notes from the scale are going to be 1 3 5b, or C#, E and G.
Here’s the C# minor scale:
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 (8)
C# D# E F# G# A B (C#)
As you can see, the the notes from the B minor scale are nearly the same, but perfectly aligned to give us the pitches necessary to create C#°.
B C# D E F# G A (B)
Play with these exercises and let your fingers get used to the basic shapes.
Even though you won’t typically use a diminished chord in Rock, Blues or Country, you may find yourself drawn to Jazz at some point, or you may just have need for a very dissonant sound in one of your original progressions. You never know where a chord might pop up, so get familiar.
If nothing else, the fingering variety helps you build your speed and dexterity, so don’t skimp, even if you don’t like how they sound!
Peace~
Dave
