Hey Friend,
Have you ever tried to have a conversation about music with a non-musician? It can be a little frustrating.
You get excited over something new you’ve learned and you want to share that discovery, but your significant other or friend is like, “Oh, that’s cool. Did you hear about the sale at Dunkin’ Donuts?”
Um, okay...
It’s like trying to teach a pig to sing; it’s a waste of your time and it just annoys the pig.
No, I’m not calling family and friends pigs. Don’t call the sensitivity police on me… #triggered
All jokes aside, most people just aren’t all that interested in the little details you find captivating. Their eyes start to glaze over when you go into an explanation of how so and so from your favorite band played nearly all the guitars on someone else’s album.
They don’t really care - they’re not musicians.
They enjoy music, it’s just not their thing.
That’s a good thing, though. If everyone knew everything we know about music, discussions would get pretty boring.
People are all pretty much the same from a biological and physical standpoint. It’s the differences that make life interesting.
I find myself doing this all the time. I sit next to a guy at work that always has a radio playing. A song comes on and I start yapping about how there are seven guitar tracks on the studio recording.
Inevitably, his response is something like “ Really? Wow, never would have known that. That’s cool, but the radio is just background noise for me.”
There I go with the pig jokes again…
The differences in people are what make the world go round. Live and let live, and all that jazz.
I say let’s you and I stick to learning what we can about guitar and Rock music, and let everyone else have their interests and hobbies. I’d much rather have someone else teach pigs to sing…
You want to talk guitar and sound, I’m here for ya... Rock on!
Peace~
Dave
