Subject: Aeolian Exercises

Hey Friend,

When you read this, I’ll be well on my way to the Bahamas on a cruise ship. The wife and I needed a bit of a break from everything, so if you email me, guess what - I’m not going to get it for a few days!

If you have any questions, go ahead and send them. I’ll get back to you next week.

The Aeolian mode is particularly special because it is the mode that gives us the minor key scale. In the key of C major, we start on the A note, fifth fret on the sixth string. This is the sixth scale degree of the C major key.

Anyone who has played an A minor pentatonic scale knows where to start off!

This is a great place to remind you about (or introduce you to) relative keys. Relative keys share the same pitches (notes) as each other, but have different starting notes (sound familiar?).

It’s kinda like family - You share the same bloodline, but you’re different than your sibling or cousin.

The relative minor key of C major is A minor, our Aeolian mode. Which makes the key of C the relative major of the key of A minor.

Doesn’t matter which key you’re messing around in - the Aeolian mode with always give you your relative minor key.

For example, if the song is in D major, the relative minor key is B minor.

Anyway, here are the exercises for the Aeolian mode:

Have a good one!

Peace~
