As I mentioned yesterday, in the key of E major, the A major chord is the IV chord. Again, A major (or just "A") is constructed using the A major scale:
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 A B C# D E F# G#
If we write out the E major scale, we also see that the notes necessary for A major (A, C# and E) are nestled nicely inside the scale, fitting it within the current key:
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 E F# G# A B C# D#
