Subject: A Substitute for That Hard-a~~ Chord

Hey Friend,

There are many different types of chords we can use in songs.
  • Major...
  • Minor...
  • Diminished...
  • Suspended...
  • 7 chords...
The list goes on and on.

Each type of chord is used to get across some sort of feeling. Some are pretty apparent:
  • Major for a positive, happy vibe.
  • Minor for a sadder state of affairs.
Others are a bit more mysterious:
  • Major 7 for some hope.
  • Diminished 7 for some suspense.
Hopefully you get the picture. Chords add a lot of color to music because of the way the individual notes combine sonically in our ears.

What's more, you may not even notice the chords because of how the melody is written. But don't be misled - the chords are there to give the melody support for what ever direction the song is going emotionally.

Chords help give a song depth that the melody by itself couldn't pull off.

So when we have all these chord shapes and sounds available to us, why do we bother with power chords?

Because learning to play chords is very challenging. In fact, it can be downright hard, especially when you factor in all the weird contortions our fingers have to get used to.

There is an easier way to get some early success. That is with using power chords.

In nearly any case where you would strum a chord in a song, a power chord can be substituted for the more complex chord shapes. Obviously there are some applications where you kinda need to have the full chord fingering - like if it's a song using finger picking.

But when you're learning and you need to feel like you're making progress because things don't seem to be progressing like you want them to, grab some tabs of your favorite artist and replace the listed chords with power chords.

Sure, it won't sound exactly like the record - but it'll be close. And you'll be able to enjoy playing along with the song.

Isn't that what got you interested in music in the first place?

Peace~

Dave
