Subject: A Major as the VII Chord

Hey Friend,

The final triad we can form from the notes that make up the B minor scale (from the key of B minor) is A major. A falls in line as the VII chord in the harmonic progression:

Im    IIdim  III IVm  Vm  VI VII
Bm C#dim D  Em  F#m G  A

The A major chord is built from the 1 3 5 notes of the A major scale (A, C# and E):

1  2  3   4  5   6    7   (8)
A B C#E  F# G# (A)

And, as you would expect by now, these notes also make up part of the B minor scale:

1   2  3  4  5   6 7  (8)
B C# D E F# G A (B)

Here are the various positions up the neck where you can play A Major.

And its barre chords:

That’ll do it for the key of B minor. The next key we’re going to look at is the key of F# minor. I’ll be you’re excited! But I may make you wait until next week to get started on that… Can you hear Carly Simon singing?

Let me know if you have any questions. Have a great one!

Peace~

Dave
