Subject: A Major as the VI Chord

Hey Friend,

We’re coming down to the wire - only two more chords in the C# minor harmonic scale. And it’s Friday!

The VI chord is A major in the key of C# minor.

Im      IIdim    III  IVm   Vm   VI  VII
C#m  D#dim  E  F#m  G#m  A   B

A major is made up of the A, C# and E notes (the 1 3 5), pulled from the A major scale.

1  2   3  4  5  6   7   (8)
A B C# D E F# G# (A)

And if by chance you haven’t caught this point, these three notes are also prevalent in the key of C# minor, so the A chord is a perfect fit in the key.

1    2   3   4   5   6  7   (8)
C# D# E F# G# A  B (C#)

A is a common chord you should be familiar with, and it is part of the CAGED system, so I have little doubt you’ve practiced A major before. Regardless, here are exercise files to help you solidify your skill:

Here are the various positions up the neck where you can play A Major.
