Hey Friend,

While I was looking for something interesting to share with you today (taking a little break from the chords of C major), I came across an article talking about a classic guitar solo that has never really gotten much attention. Most of the world has heard it, but probably never gave it a second thought because of the catchy chorus.

The song is "Rock Around The Clock" by Bill Haley and the Comets. Even if you didn't grow up in the 70s like I did, Happy Days is a TV show you've like seen or heard about. The song was used during the introductory credits, no doubt making it even more popular than when it was a hit in 1955.

The solo in the song is a monster, and truly before it's time. A sad fact is that the original guitarist (Danny Cedrone) died a couple months after recording this solo. He was a session guitarist, which is clearly displayed with his ability to incorporate the Rock, Blues and Jazz influences into the solo.

There was a short article telling the story of the solo in Guitar World magazine a couple months back - I thought you might enjoy taking a quick look at it.

I had hoped there would be tabs or something to get a more detail view of the solo, but no such luck. They did however point me to a Youtube channel of a guy (David Escobar) that demonstrates the solo and has tabs scroll across the video. I suppose f you have software like Song Surgeon you can capture the video and slow it down. Here's the direct link to that video.

David is worth checking out, too. He's got a lot of good stuff on his Youtube channel that's interesting. I particularly enjoyed the Mozart piece on his home page - Mozart's The Magic Flute. Every orchestra part played on guitar by this dude. It's pretty cool and good inspiration.
