Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time - C - July 28, 2013 Pray Always Jesus taught his followers to pray simply, but to pray always. The balance between the two marked the spiritual life of a good disciple. STUDIES FOR THE SIXTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME WEEKLY BLOG The Discipline of Prayer DAILY READINGS FOR THE SIXTEENTH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME THE FEAST OF MARY MAGDALENE July 22 THE FEAST OF ST. JAMES THE ELDER July 25 MP3 PODCAST In this week's audio podcast, look into the greatest Catholic mind of the twentieth century, Karl Rahner. His spiritual journey began with his parents' invitation to pray. FIRST READING Genesis 18 portrayed Abraham negotiating with God over the fate of Sodom. PSALM Psalm 138 thanked YHWH for his faithfulness, for he stood by the author. SECOND READING In his letter to the Colassians, St. Paul told his audience they really only had one need in life, Christ. GOSPEL Luke 11 presented the author's shorter version of the Lord's Prayer and two parables on the need for constant, persistent prayer. CHILDREN'S READING In the story for the first reading, Barry bargained with his friends to get a coveted baseball card. In the same way, Abraham bargained with God. In the story for the gospel, Jackie persisted with her mother until she struck a deal. She would help her mother in return for some time with her cousin. She won't give up, just like the widow before the unjust judge. FAMILY ACTIVITY To instill the balance between wisdom and persistence, play a variation on the “tug of war” game as a way to discuss the balance needed between harassment and giving up. |
