Fifth Sunday in Easter - C - April 28, 2013 Love One Another How do we live out a life of faith? Jesus gave us a simple answer: love one another. Love meant giving respect. It meant giving deference to others. STUDIES FOR THE FOURTH WEEK IN EASTER DAILY READINGS FOR THE FOURTH WEEK IN EASTER MP3 PODCAST This week's audio podcast reflects on another of John's favorite images: the vine and the branches. We need the Lord and each other to remain faithful, to produce fruit. FIRST READING In Acts 14, St. Paul reacted to some of unintended consequences of his missionary efforts. His success with the non-Jewish converts created the need for new communities and leadership for those communities. Paul provided for both needs. PSALM Psalm 145 was an exercise is style, mixing praise with prayers of mercy, exaltation with descriptions of God’s loving concern. SECOND READING Revelations 21 described the passing of the old order to the new. God swept away evil, brought about the new Jerusalem and made all things new. GOSPEL In John 13, Jesus announced that he would soon receive his glory, so he gave his followers a new command: love each other. CHILDREN’S READINGS In the story for the first reading, Kim encouraged Mary, even losing a race for her, so Mary could improve. Paul and Barnabas endured much so they, too, could encourage others. In the story for gospel, Margaret realized that her ever busy mother took the time to love others, to laugh and smile and pass happiness along to others. Margaret made a poster that said it all: “Mom is love.” Jesus wants us to love each other, just like Margaret’s mother loved. FAMILY ACTIVITY This week's family activity is the “Family Mulch Pile,” a way to stress the “vine and branches” analogy. |
