We do our best to satisfy customers, but you can't please all the people, all the time.

Recently, we had a customer come into the store who had purchased a telescope about 3 months prior and now decided she wanted a different model now. She wanted to get into astroimaging, and the instrument she had purchased was more specifically for visual observing.

No problem,  you can trade in your existing telescope towards a different model.

We do that all the time.  People's needs and expectations change over time in this hobby, or they want to get a bigger aperture,
or sometimes if they are moving to a condo or apt. downsizing to something smaller.

But here is the thing: She expected that she could get a 100% credit for the telescope that had been used several times,
towards the purchase of a new one.

Here is why we are unable to do that: Once at telescope is taken out of the box and has been used, it is no longer new.
Even if you only used it once.

Seriously. Here is why:

When our customers buy a new telescope from, they expect and deserve to get a brand new one in a factory sealed box,
(unless they are buying one of our showroom floor, which is a display model and that is clearly understood) and that is exactly
what you get from us, unless stated otherwise.

Other dealers may take instruments back, repackage them and sell them as new, we how ever will not do this
as a matter of policy.

She then argued that we could still sell it as new as it had "only been used a few times".

I told her that the instrument has been used, and is no longer new, and therefore it would have to be sold as used at
discounted price.   That is our policy, and we are firm on it.

That is one of the reasons we carry a ton of inventory in stock and on hand in both our store, and our warehouse
to ensure that you can get whatever you order in a reasonable time period.
