Subject: Watching a plane crash
Hello Friend,
A scorcher of a weekend, even here in the North.
And people crashing float planes here on Manitoulin Island.
More on that in a moment
So there I was visiting the Split Rail Brewery in Gore Bay, Manitoulin island to try out their new wheat ale, which is a perfect craft beer
for a hot summer day.
I called my buddy Richard, who runs the Buoys restaurant in the harbour at Gore bay, and asked him if he had a keg of the stuff
on tap at his place. Turns out he did not, so I suggested he get himself in gear, and get one by asap as I was going to drop by
later to have a cold one on the patio, and enjoy his amazing pulled pork pizza.
Heck, I was going to carry the keg over if I had too. However, Eleanor said there was some laws against illegal transport of liquor
yada, yada.
Richard ordered the keg pronto.
I made my way over to the patio , about 500 yards away and That's when all of a sudden it happened.
Some dude was flying a float plane out of the harbour, and as he was lifting and turning around, to fly into the wind,
the very powerful crosswinds in the harbour literally flipped his plane head over heels and he ended up in the drink.
Fortunately, he bailed rapidly and got out of the plane.
I called 911 immediately, and it did not take long for other boaters in the area to find out what was going on, and ride over to his rescue.
Eventually, the police, fire and rescue showed up.
Now anyone who lives locally knows that Gore bay Harbour is one of the most dangerous places to fly in and out of due to the very
strong crosswinds that change on a dime. And yesterday it was really bad due to the heat, humidity and whatever.
This pilot was a bit older, so likely an experienced pilot.
He will have quite the story to tell I'm sure.
Anyway, play safe out there and do your level best to stay cool. Jump in the lake, go to an air conditioned mall if you have too as a last resort, or drop by Khan Scope, which is air conditioned. We are open all weekend as it is.
We are not serving beer unfortunately, but I will have a drink on your behalf of course.
Clear Skies,
Ray Khan
