Sounds incredulous doesn't it?  However, it's true.

      When I think back to the first Tasco refractor I used many years ago,  and how difficult it was to use,
what I remember most of all was struggling to look through the eyepiece.

The basic optics of the telescope were ok, but the supplied standard eyepieces, which were a 12.5mm and 6mm
plus a 3x barlow made the instrument difficult to use.

Why do most  manufacturers supply substandard eyepieces (things have improved, but not much)with their
telescopes?

Simply, to keep costs down.

And that's why one of the first things you should consider doing after owning a telescope is to upgrade the eyepieces.

Now, you really don't need a bunch of eyepieces.

What you do need are a few good ones:

Admittedly, I do own several eyepieces, (collected over the years) and as a rule of thumb, I use about 3 on a regular basis.

For the majority of observing, all you need is low, medium and high magnification if the seeing and conditions warrant it.

And that's it.

Fortunately for us amateur astronomers, eyepiece technology, and coatings, and glass have vastly improved over the past
30 years, and today there are far greater choices.

The best quality eyepieces, bar none, are made by TeleVue Optics.

They also tend to be a bit more expensive, but like anything in life, you get what you pay for.

Just ask any amateur astronomer that uses them.

Best of all, you only have to buy them once, and you can keep them for life.

Regardless of which telescope you own, now or in the future, you will always be delighted with your
Televue eyepieces.

Yes, there are less expensive brands available, such as Explore Scientific and Baader Hyperion if you are on
a more limited budget, then do consider those.

There are many different eyepiece designs and types, and I could write a book about that, and now and again
I will look through my collection and pick one up, and be fascinated by it.

Yep, I know that sounds odd.  However, I can associate memories with some specific eyepieces.  Like my old
Meade 20mm research grade eyepiece that sits on my desk. 

It was the best in it's time!

PPS Eyepieces are the "fuel' of a telescope. If you use a low grade, you'll get sputtering results!
