Subject: The difference between 2" and !.25" eyepieces and why should care
Hello Friend,
You should care because in some instances it can re-energize your stargazing.
Newsletter subscriber Neal S. asked a question recently about the difference between 1.25" and 2" eyepieces.
It's a good question and complicated by the fact that some eyepieces have a dual barrel size, both 1.25" & 2"
and others only1.25' or exclusively 2".
To keep it simple, it's safe to assume that if an eyepiece has a dual barrel, the optics are going to be in the 1.25"
size barrel. The 2'" Barrel is there to make the eyepiece more stable if the user is using a 2" Star Diagonal on
their telescope (Highly recommended).
A 2" diagonal the instance of a refractor, SCT or Maksutov design
telescope.
It's rare that a 2 inch reflector or dobson would ever use a 2" Diagonal as an accessory.
The one key difference between the 2" and 1.25" eyepiece barrel will be the eye relief.
That is, how comfortable it is to look through on your telescope.
Because a 2" eyepiece has more surface glass area, you will find it easier to use.
Bear in mind that these are
generally manufactured in long focal lengths, say 55mm to 18mm and as a result are not the best for planetary
viewing because they do not magnify greatly.
What they are ideal for is Deep Space images and wider fields of view in your instrument. Objects such as
Andromeda and Orion and open globular clusters such as the Pleaides, are best seen through a low power 2"
eyepiece for example.
I'll discuss the different types of eyepieces in the next email newsletter.
