Subject: Reclaiming dark skies in your neighbourhood

Hello Friend,

Light pollution's negative effect's can be insidious.

Starting at home is the first step:   First thing to do is reduce the number of outside lights you have at home,
in your driveway, for example

Secondly, use lower wattage bulbs when possible.  You don't need a 100 watt bulb every time.

Consider buying and using LED bulbs.  Yes, more costly upfront, but more energy efficient in the long term.

Use motion sensors, and timers.

Buy Full cut off fixtures.  Many lighting departments in big box stores, or independents now carry these.

Also, when choosing bulbs, buy those that have a yellowish or warm orange type of light.  Not those
with harsh white light.

You can even retrofit existing fixtures with a small outlay.

There are many overall benefits for all of us. Amateur astronomers in particular.

Educate your friends and neighbours.

Invite them over to look through your scope; pick the Moon, Saturn or Jupiter or open cluster and explain
then explain how light pollution is detrimental to us all.

Clear Skies,

Ray Khan

PS It's encouraging to know that in many areas of Canada, & North America,
there are individuals and organizations pursuing these ideas with
businesses and organizations locally. Kudos to them. Don't stop now.
