Khan Scope Centre AstroNotes February 24
Anniversary of the Discovery of SuperNova 1987a
by Canadian Dr. Ian Shelton.
1987: Light from the brightest supernova of the 20th century
reaches Earth from 168,000 light-years away.
At the University of Toronto’s observatory in the foothills of the Andes
mountains, 30-year-old astronomer Ian Shelton was looking at photographic plates
in the wee hours of Feb. 24, while listening to Pink Floyd's The
Wall. The plates covered an area near the Large Magellanic Cloud, when he
spotted an exceptionally bright spot.
“I did not call it a Supernova in my head at that
point,” he recently recalled. “I just thought, This thing is bright.”
That spot did turn out to be supernova 1987A. When he walked outside the
observatory, the object was visible to the naked eye. It was the first time a
human being could have seen a supernova without a telescope since 1604.

Women on stargazing trip drove into the water at night, cops say
North Dakota, USA
You would tend to think of Stargazing as a relatively safe hobby, wouldn't
you? Better to play it safe and not to trespass
onto private property that you are not familiar with. A lesson to be learned
here.
Sadly, 3 college women (2 Americans and One Canadian) on a Stargazing
trip accidentally drove into a Pond in a farmers field, and
drowned in the Jeep Suv they were driving.
Apparently, one of the Ladies made a distress cell phone call to a friend after
they went
into the water.. A pet dog was also among the victims.
The 3 friends would often go out on Spontaneous stargazing trips.
