Subject: Ghosts of the Dunlap Observatory

Hello Friend,

I'll preface by saying I don't really believe in ghosts.

However, I have had a few spooky experiences in my life.

One night, several years ago,
I was at the Dunlap observatory, (DDO) and the telescope operator   Heide Debond
was on duty,  and was doing research with the telescope till the wee hours of the morning.

It was about 2am, and I was pretty tired and wanted to take a nap.

Heide mentioned that there was a "special sofa" complete with blankets, pillow in the coatroom
which was adjacent to the ladies bathroom and I could go sleep in there.

She also told me that this was the same sofa that Research astronomer Helen Sawyer Hogg
would often have slept on during her tenure at the DDO, after a night of observing, or perhaps
while waiting for the clouds to dissapear.

I thought, "wow that's a pretty famous sofa!"

The coatroom is in the administration building, located next to the observatory.

So I wandered over for 40 winks.

Of course, being quite an old building, one would hear all manner of creeks and noises,
in the middle of the night.

I admit it.  I was spooked!

So it wasn't exactly a restful sleep.

Perhaps the spirit of Helen Sawyer Hogg was wandering the halls,
and I will say that I certainly felt her presence sometimes when in the beautiful  library room,
which is where the astronomers would "hang out " when not officially working..

You know, tea time at 4pm and all that

I'm sure the observatory could tell a thousand fascinating stories....if the walls could talk.

Perhaps you yourself have always wanted to own a big telescope?

If so right now we have some real special  savings on "observatory sized" telescopes.

Here's the list:

Clear Skies,
