It's early morning, and I'm sitting up in bed typing this
newsletter on my iPad.

On my birthday.

This winter morning is dark still, but crisp and clear, and the
day stretches ahead.

I've had enough birthdays to know what will happen next...

A number of people will ring me - mostly family, but also a few
friends.

We'll go throughout the usual "you're only as old as you feel"
stuff, and laugh a lot.

Very few people will give me gifts, and I prefer it this way.

One of the happy problems of being wealthy is that no one knows
what to give you.

So for years I've insisted that a hand drawn card is all I
need... an element of personalization in an increasingly same-old
world. But nobody does that nowadays, it's a lot of work.

So over the years my request has turned into an insider's joke.

And of course I'll also ring someone special - without her I
wouldn't be here at all... my 90 year-old mother.

My age today has caused me to think also about this business that
I started exactly 20 years ago.

It seems almost impossible to think how far it's come in that
time... the thousands of winners I know about, and probably tens
of thousands more that I don't - because only 1 in 100 will think
or remember to share their winning stories with me.

While I'm happy enough with where I am, it's a fact I didn't
invent a lifesaving medicine, nor get knighted for my services to
industry or entertainment, nor build a vast empire of businesses
- as I had hoped when I was a teen.

But I'm very happy with my slot in the lottery world... helping a
growing group of people zero in on one of the most exciting kind
of games on the planet... a pure game of chance where the
ugliness and desperation of the casino or gaming machine is
absent.

Because very few players become addicted to lotto compared to the
other forms of gaming.

And in many countries a percentage of lottery proceeds are spent
in the community in the form of charity. Not many organizations
turn down a lottery grant for funding.

This has always made the lottery a positive form of fund
allocation.

And so the lottery has become socially acceptable in many ways,
and hundreds of millions of people play each week in every
country in the world.

The lottery is a game where a little is spent on an easy weekly
basis, but the rewards are enormous in a way that no other kind
of enterprise can compete with.
