Mary Pleasant is the daughter of a slave family living in Monroe, Georgia. Everyone has been talking about the emancipation of the slaves, but when freedom finally comes, there is a lot of uncertainty about what the future holds.
All that Mary knows for sure is that she is going to go West and she is determined to find a way to get there. After answering a "Brides Wanted" advertisement on the church notice board, Mary finds herself saying goodbye to her family, perhaps forever and boarding a train with four other young brides headed for an unknown future in San Francisco.
Unfortunately, someone forgot to tell Mary that her husband-to-be, John Smart, is a white man. But Mary knows that faith and courage will see her through, and she is determined to be a success in this town.
John Smart is a handsome and successful businessman. Why has he taken a colored girl for a wife?
Can Mary's faith carry her through when she is accused of murder after a terrible accident?
Mary is a strong and determined girl. What happens when she finds the man who truly loves her?
