Subject: For the love of all that's holy, say yes!

“From what I've seen, it isn't so much the act of asking that paralyzes us--it's what lies beneath: the fear of being vulnerable, the fear of rejection, the fear of looking needy or weak. The fear of being seen as a burdensome member of the community instead of a productive one." ~ Amanda Palmer

NEWSFLASH: Women aren't that great at accepting help

That doesn't mean that we don't want help and it doesn't mean that we don't need help. Somewhere along the way, we've created a knee jerk response to say no whenever someone offers assistance. For some bizarre reason (probably the same ones listed in the quote above) we automatically say no without even thinking about it.

I've seen this in my own behavior, with women I know and even women I don't know. Here's two examples that come to mind:

#1 — A company that owed me money called to ask if I'd like them to mail the check since they knew I was getting ready to go on vacation. My response: "That's ok. I'll stop by to get it."

What in Sam Hill was I thinking? I didn't have time to get that check.
And PS: I didn't.

#2 — While on vacation, I saw a mom taking a picture of her husband, son and daughter with the ocean in the background. I offered to take the picture for her so she could be in it too. She nicely declined. Confused, her daughter said, "why not mom?" Her mom shushed her and went back to snapping photos.

Not only are we sabotaging ourselves, we're setting a bad example for the next generation of women.

Here's what happens when we don't say yes:
  1. We end up with too much to do
  2. Which leads to being cranky, tired and stressed out
  3. Which leads to binge eating (see #2)
  4. Which then leads to unwanted weight gain, guilt and remorse (see #3)
  5. Which eventually leads to a chronic health condition (high blood pressure, anxiety, insomnia, diabetes, GI issues, and the list goes on ...)
Life would be a whole lot easier if we would just get in the habit of saying yes a little more often. Next time someone offers to help you, let them. In the grand scheme of things it doesn't matter if they put the plates facing the wrong way in the dishwasher or don't get all the silks off the corn when they're shucking it.

Step into a new day ... and just say yes.

Take care,
