In the United States, Memorial Day is often the unofficial kick-off to summer.
But before we all go off to our family cookouts, beach excursions (should the weather cooperate) or mini vacations, let's take a little time to remember what it is we are actually celebrating.
Dating back to the American Civil War when it was known as “Decoration Day,” the practice of placing flowers on the graves of fallen soldiers was done in remembrance of the men and women who have served in the United States Armed Forces. It was also to honor the freedom which they upheld.
"In the truest sense, freedom cannot be bestowed; it must be achieved." – President Franklin D. Roosevelt
For all who serve, have served or sacrificed, we thank you.
